“My entry into the electrical industry started as an apprentice with the Board of Fire Commissioners in 1983. As a first-year apprentice, one of the tasks I did was assist with the maintenance of a generator and main switchboard at a particular Fire Station in the city's inner eastern suburbs. Little did I know that 40 years later, I would be replacing that main switchboard and generator.”
This wasn't just another infrastructure upgrade. The FRNSW campus is a vital emergency services hub for NSW, housing the Triple Zero call centre, Support Operations Centre, Hazmat training centre, and an operational fire station. The challenge? Delivering a complex electrical upgrade with minimal disruption to critical operations.
“On the surface, it was straightforward: replace old infrastructure with new. But the complexity came from the nature of the site and the need for seamless coordination across multiple contractors and stakeholders.”
As head contractor, Star Group led the project with precision, planning every detail of the five-day shutdown in collaboration with builders, generator installers, mechanical contractors, and fire services teams. Glenn credits the success to the extraordinary teamwork:
“I’ve never experienced this level of collaboration and positivity on any other project. Everyone was invested. Special mention goes to the Star City Service team: Bronson Wyper, Josh Stewart, Cameron Comstive, and Frank Sultana. Without their positive approach, technical skill, and willingness to do whatever it took to see the job through, delivering this project would not have been possible.”
This project is a testament to Star Group's City Service Office's capability to deliver high-end, technical projects on time and on budget and to Glenn's leadership and dedication.
“Being nominated and subsequently selected as a finalist for a NECA award has achieved a long-held goal of mine. I have been fortunate enough to have worked on many great projects over nearly 30 years of project management, but to become a finalist on this particular project is really satisfying for personal and nostalgic reasons.”
Congratulations again, Glenn. Your story is a powerful reminder of how experience, passion, and collaboration can come together to deliver something truly exceptional!
