Joint Venture for Centrelink Office

The Star Group and the Heyday Group have formed a joint venture to supply electrical and communications services for the new $180 million national head office for Centrelink in Canberra.

Multiplex will build and manage the new facility which will be owned by the Allco Investment Group and leased to Centrelink.

The building is expected to gain a 4.5 star Australian Building Greenhouse Rating, and initiatives include water tanks to collect 500,00 litres of rainwater and water heating from solar panels and wind powered generators.

The electrical design is a significant departure from normal with the emphasis being placed on energy conservation to achieve the environmentally friendly rating.

The project has taken a while to get off the ground due to organisational changes in the federal government and then because of the collapse of the original builder, Walter Constructions.

The Heyday-Star Joint Venture expects to eventually have about 40 people working on site. Most of the trade positions will be filled by locals from Canberra and Queanbeyan.

Almost 2,800 Centrelink employees will move into the building on completion which is expected to be around mid 2007.

The joint venture’s work, at this stage, is limited to the base building.
